Above Ground Pool Vacuum

How to Vacuum Your Above Ground Pool

The sun is out, and it’s time to have fun. Before getting your floaties out, it’s essential to vacuum your pool to help ensure a sanitary swim. At Discount Pool Direct, we understand that vacuuming an above ground pool can be tricky at first. However, with a few simple steps, you’ll be showing off your backstroke in no time. Let’s dive in!

Everything You Need to Vacuum an Above Ground Pool

The right equipment makes all the difference when vacuuming your above ground pool. Check these essentials off your shopping list to help ensure a clean, debris-free swim!

  • Pool Brush
  • Telescoping Pole
  • Vacuum Head
  • Vacuum Hose
  • Pool Pump and Filter System
  • Skimmer Vacuum Plate (optional)

1. Give Your Walls a Scrub

Before beginning, we recommend brushing your pool walls for dirt, algae, or debris buildup. Your pool’s waterline is a popular space for contaminants to hang out, so be sure it gets a good scrub. For best results, brush your pool the night before vacuuming. Brushing the night before lets debris sink to the bottom of your pool, where it can be vacuumed.

2. Prepare Your Pump and Filter

It’s time to prepare your equipment. Start by inspecting your pump to ensure it’s clean and in working order. If you notice a lot of debris in your pool, we recommend setting your filter to ‘Waste’ mode to pump water out of it. Now, all you need to do is attach your vacuum head to the hose and prepare to prime!

3. Prime Your Vacuum Hose

Vacuum hose priming eliminates air bubbles that build up in your vacuum. Excess air can weaken your pressure or even damage your vacuum. Luckily, getting rid of those pesky bubbles only takes a few simple steps. Let’s take a look!

  1. Submerge the vacuum head.
  2. Starting at the vacuum head, begin feeding your hose into the water.
  3. Sink the entire hose, stopping at its other end.
  4. Water will flow out of the end of the hose, meaning you successfully removed any excess air.

4. Connect Your Vacuum to the Pump

Now that your vacuum is primed, it’s time to start your pump and connect your hose. Attach your skimmer plate if you have one, ensuring a secure connection. Open your pump and door, then simply drop your hose inside.

5. Let the Vacuuming Begin

It’s vacuum time! Using your tele-pole, skim your vacuum across the pool’s floor. Do this slowly to keep debris from rising to the surface. Make sure your vacuum head stays submerged to avoid losing prime. Rinse and repeat until your pool’s floor is clean!

Note: If your pressure gauge is ten pounds over its normal running pressure, stop every few minutes and backwash as needed.

6. Cleanup and Storage

After vacuuming, remove any debris from your pump’s filter. Feel free to backwash the filter if necessary. If you adjusted it earlier, switch your filter to its standard setting. Now, all that’s left is disassembling your vacuum pump, letting it dry, and storing it in a safe container.
